Junior STEAM - Mechanical Robot Hand
Summer Reading Challenge
Wednesday, July 15
4:00pm - 5:30pm
Explore robotics, mechanics and puppetry techniques by making your own robotic hand.
Thumbs up, peace sign, high five, fist bump, pinkie promise, gripping a ball...simple gestures that take complex coordination between thousands of nerves, bones, tendons, and muscles in the hand and arm. Science has made it possible to duplicate human motion using a complex combination of wires and electronic signals by designing artificial robot hands. Today, we are going to make our own mechanical robot hand from simple materials like cardboard and straws, that will be capable of making hand gestures and evening picking up objects. To test out the hand function, participants will be challenged to be the quickest to pick up and move objects from one side of the library to the other, using only their robotic hand.
Recommended age: 9-12+
Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
