Join plant scientist and writer Erin Zimmerman for a one hour talk on modern botanical collection and natural history research.
Do scientists still go on expeditions to collect plant specimens like they did centuries ago? And if so… why? Even today, botanical expeditions and the specimens they produce are critical in building our knowledge about plant biodiversity and protecting species from extinction. We’ll discuss biodiversity hotspots, how collections work, a bit of the history behind collecting and herbaria, and see some photos from Erin’s work collecting specimens in the rainforests of Guyana. We’ll finish off by looking at the challenges facing botanical collections today, and what everyday plant lovers can do to help.
Attendees will be entered in to win a copy of Erin's book: "Unrooted : botany, motherhood, and the fight to save an old science".
