Be creative and make a symmetrical relief or intaglio print in the shape of a circle with cardboard and foam pieces.
Math, science and art collide in this week's activity! Make your own printing plate that can be used over and over again, using cardboard as the rigid base and foam pieces to make the the textured design element. The specific plate design is radial, as the plate is circular and the pattern (yay, geometry!) diverges from the centre of the circle like the rays of a sun (or the radii of a circle. More, geometry!). Your pattern design will also repeat so that one side will be exactly the same as the one facing it, which is called symmetry (even more geometry!). Now add some paint to your printing plate and press it onto cardstock or paper, and if the math is mathing, all of these elements together give you a radial symmetrical collagraph! You can play with height and texture in your design so that the foam pieces form your main pattern (relief) or take advantage of the softness of the foam to engrave designs into the pieces so that that the blank spaces are the highlight of your plate pattern (intaglio), or blend both printmaking techniques. Either way, no two prints will ever turn out exactly the same, which is the beauty of printmaking! This program is designed for intermediate skill level. All materials will be provided.
