Hear from Maria Moore as she leads a discussion on her book, Not My Kind of Mennonite.
Not My Kind of Mennonite is a personal dive into the history, culture, and religious and social pressures faced by one Mexican Mennonite family. Moore blends her research about the Mennonite community with firsthand accounts about her family to fully explore her father's legacy, life, hopes, and dreams.
Maria Moore was born in Mexico but has spent most of her life in southwestern Ontario. She has had a fulfilling career as a registered nurse with a focus on mental health, addictions and advocacy. With her first book, she hopes to bring awareness of the specific traumas and abuse in the private world of Mennonites and make it safe to disclose and seek treatment without shame.
Maria Moore will talk about her life in Mexico, the emigration of Mennonites from Russia to Manitoba, and then the journey to Mexico. She will discuss the different types of Mennonites and the traditions of Old Colony Mennonites before showing dresses and talking about clothing choices and customs. Maria will also do a reading from the book and take questions.
