Let's Have a Family Party

Bring your entire family and participate in fun activities with kids and teens at the Sarnia Library and the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery to Family Literacy Day.
Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Make food, sing songs, and play games. The possibilities for learning are endless – and it’s fun when you do it together.
Activities will be located at both the Sarnia Library, Sarnia Library Theatre and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery. Drop-in for a few activities, or stay with us for the entire day!
Sarnia Library
Sarnia Library activities will run from 9:00-12:00 and will include:
- Face painting
- Henna art
- VR and retro gaming with District Beta
- Buzz and Honey from the Sarnia Sting
- Take home crafting activities with the Parent and Professional Resource Centre and EarlyON
- Green screen photo booth
- Paper lantern making, an oil discovery game, and artefacts with the Oil Museum of Canada
- Detective in Time activity to study and try to identify unidentified artifacts with Lambton Heritage Museum
- Physical literacy activities with Lambton Public Health
- Makerspace activities
- Community mural activity
- The legend of the dreamcatcher, dreamcatcher crafts and colouring sheets, and songs and drumming with grandmother drum from Ska:na Family Learning Centre
- Information tables from Canada Learning Bond, Lambton County Children's Services, Lambton Public Health, Literacy Lambton, and Boys and Girls Club Sarnia-Lambton
- And more!
Snacks donated by Superstore in Sarnia will be available at this location.
Sarnia Library Theatre
Entertainment in the Sarnia Library Theatre will include a film screening and two performances from Dan the Music Man, songwriter and entertainer whose enthusiastic performances have made him a favourite of family audiences all over Canada, the United States and as far away as Seoul, South Korea.
10:00-10:30 - Dan the Music Man: World of Words - This wonderful, participatory program blends music, laughter, rhythm and rhymes to celebrate the gift of literacy.
11:30-12:00 - Dan the Music Man: World of Words - This wonderful, participatory program blends music, laughter, rhythm and rhymes to celebrate the gift of literacy.
2:00-3:30 - Lilo and Stitch - This PG rated film from Disney explores themes of loyalty, friendship, and 'Ohana, the Hawaiian tradition of family.
Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery
JNAAG Activities will run from 12:00p.m - 3:00p.m and will include:
- Family friendly tours of the Family Palette exhibit
- A scavenger hunt
- Family Saturday Studio Drop-in - Embark on a journey of colour and texture as we delve into the captivating realm of still life compositions using oil pastels
Door Prizes
Each family that arrives at one of the sites will receive a bag with information on Family Literacy and the different organizations present. In each bag will be ballots for prize draws:
Grand Prize
- A Sarnia Library Theatre booking for up to 25 people to watch a movie of your choice from the list provided and a pizza party provided by Dominos Pizza in Sarnia
Additional Prizes
- Gift Certificates to Dominos Pizza donated by Dominos Pizza in Sarnia
- Family Party Packs created with donations from Literacy Lambton who also received a donation from the Malcolm Cameron IODE Chapter
