Junior STEAM - Why the Face?
Summer Reading Challenge
Thursday, August 13
4:00pm - 5:30pm
Explore kinesics and facial expression analysis by making a funny faces flipbook and playing games related to facial expressions and non-verbal communication..
Have you ever heard someone exclaim: "You don't have to say a thing! I can read it on your face?" Small movements in different muscle groups of our face form the cues that others use to read our expressions and moods. A raised eyebrow, a crooked smile, or a wrinkled nose can show and tell a lot about what we are feeling inside. Today, participants will let their creativity reign supreme by making a flipbook of eyes, noses, and mouths that will tell a different emotional story with each flip of the page. They will then play an improv card game where each person has to come up with a story for the facial expression they see in the picture they flip over. Finally, if time remains, the group will play the ultimate game of kinesics and non-verbal communication mastery: Charades!
Recommended for ages: 6 to 14
Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
