Join us for a screening of the award-winning film Women Talking, followed by a Q & A with actor Shayla Brown who starred as Helena in the film.
Shayla Brown has been acclaimed in the “big three”, namely a TV series, live theatre and a feature film. She has acted alongside Jason Momoa in the Apple TV Plus sci-fi series See. In April 2022 she made her Toronto stage debut at the Crows Theatre in Orphans for the Czar. In December 2022 she appeared in Women Talking, a film directed by Sarah Polley that won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Sarah Polley has encouraged Shayla to write and direct. Shayla, who has been blind since birth, is an advocate for better representation of the visually impaired in a more inclusive Hollywood.
In Women Talking, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. When the women discover who has been drugging and attacking them at night, they're given an ultimatum. Forgive them or leave.
This movie is rated PG-13 because of mature and sensitive themes and has a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes.
