Black Gold on Blue Water
Oil, Shipping, and the St. Clair River
Tuesday, August 11
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Come explore the stories of the ships and the systems that turned the St. Clair River into one of Canada's most important industrial corridors. In Partnership with the Oil Museum of Canada.
When the oil boom in Enniskillen Township slowed in the late 1800s, the heart of the industry moved to the St. Clair River. This water highway linked local refineries to the world. This talk explores how the river’s deep-water routes fueled Canada’s oil industry. We will dive into the history of Imperial Oil’s tanker fleets in 1897 and the Canadian Oil Company’s “marine service station” at Froomfield. We will also discuss the environmental impact this growth had on the river. Come explore the stories of the ships and the systems that turned this river into one of Canada's most important industrial corridors.
